Can I stay in the dojo (classroom) and watch my child?

While parents are permitted to stay in the dojo while class is in session, this often has a negative impact on the child's learning. If your presence is needed to make your child feel comfortable, then by all means, feel free to stay. However, when parents remain in the dojo during class, some children refrain from asking questions, as they do not want to convey lack of understanding in front of their parents. Further, children may feel compelled to talk to their parents simply because of their accessibility. For these and other reasons, it is recommended that parents remain outside of the dojo while class is in session. If a parent chooses to remain inside of the dojo and the instructor perceives that his/her presence is in any way disruptive or inhibits learning, the parent will respectfully be asked to wait outside until class is over. Your child's learning and growth is the main priority.

Why doesn't the instructor correct my child when they are clearly doing it "wrong?"

Students will be corrected only after they have been given the opportunity to learn for themselves. Instructors will correct some "mistakes," but will knowingly leave others until the time is right to fix them. Do not be concerned if your child does not perform the techniques as well as other students. Some of the greatest masters were later described as initially less coordinated than their peers.

Why does the instructor often face away from the students when demonstrating techniques?

The instructor will typically face the same direction as the students so as not to confuse them with left and right. Do not worry if you feel that your child cannot see the instructor's hand positions or subtle nuances of technique. These will be addressed at the appropriate time.

When will my child get their white belt?

Students are tested for their next belt when the instructor deems it appropriate to do so. Children typically take between two to four months to earn their white belt.

How often should my child practice at home?

There is no minimum or maximum time. Master Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of modern-day karate, recommended that martial artists practice for 10 minutes, three times a day. However, each person is different and must determine what is right for them.

What kind of karate is this?

We practice a martial art that generally originated in Okinawa and thus we honor the traditions of Karate. However, our ‘style,’ has been influenced by masters of various arts. Those masters lived centuries ago in Okinawa, mainland Japan, China, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

How and when can I purchase a gi (karate uniform)?

Once your child is certain that he/she wants to continue his or her practice of the martial arts, the instructor can obtain a gi for you. You are not obligated to purchase a gi until your child is ready, however, the uniform tends to motivate students by making them feel like they are truly taking karate. The gi also makes them feel like they are a part of the class and increases commitment.

When can my child enter the evening Family Karate class at the Cherry Hill JCC?

On Monday and Thursday evenings from 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM, classes are held for all individuals ages 6 and up. This class is offered continuously throughout the year and provides the opportunity for parents to take karate with their children. Students may begin taking this class when they choose to do so. Also, children who wish to continue their practice of the martial arts during the summer months or between sessions may participate in the evening class.

If you have any other questions, feel free to talk with the instructor either before or after class.
